Brian had been struggling to secure employment due to a historical offense on his record. Despite the conviction being spent and no longer legally required to be disclosed, Brian carried a heavy sense of shame and fear of judgment. This lack of confidence made him hesitant to apply for jobs, leaving him stuck in a cycle of unemployment. Recognizing his potential, his job centre adviser referred him to the Life-Changer Mentoring Programme.
Through the programme, Brian was paired with a mentor experienced in employment coaching and personal development. His mentor helped him to understand the legal implications of a spent conviction, reassuring him that it no longer needed to hold him back. Together, they worked on rebuilding Brian’s confidence by reframing his self-perception and focusing on his skills, experience, and positive attributes.
His mentor also guided him through practical steps to re-enter the workplace, including improving his CV, preparing for interviews, and practicing responses to questions about his past. They explored job opportunities aligned with Brian’s strengths and interests.
Within four months, Brian secured a customer service role and rediscovered a sense of purpose and self-worth.
Good luck Brian!
